2004: "Troy Smith, emerging as the Buckeye leader..."

We can skip over the aberration that was the 2003 Ohio State/Michigan game - even a broken clock is right twice a day, right? I would like to think back to my second Ohio State/Michigan game I attended, courtesy of my cousin John (thanks again for those great tickets!). The lovely Mrs. Minnich and I attended the game on an unusually mild November 20th, and watched Ohio State defeat Michigan 37-21. Mrs. Minnich was not as enthusiastic about the victory as I was; she was content to rest her head on my shoulder as she slept off the effects of the early-morning tailgating festivities...

What was so noteworthy about this game?
  • This was the first of what would be three straight Troy Smith-led victories over Michigan.
  • This was the first of what would be four straight losses by Chad Henne and Mike Hart to Ohio State.

As I write this...only 3 days, 15 hours, and 3 minutes until kickoff for THE GAME...

2004: Ohio State 37, Michigan 21

I remember this one well, especially since Michigan came in ranked #7 in the country and OSU was unranked after dropping three straight Big Ten Games during the season.

No one including many Buckeye fans gave us a chance in this game and our Buckeyes showed up and dominated the game from the kickoff.

Michigan got introduced to Mr. Troy Smith!!

I thought this to be one of the best but was topped quickly by the 2005 game in the Big House!

Currently, 3 days and 1 hour until The Game.

  2. Interesting note.

1st Year coaches at U of M are 10-1-1 against the Buckeyes.

The only loss (or Buckeye win) being against Harry Kipke in 1929 and the tie coming in 1900 under the leadership of Langdon "Biff" Lea.

I am hoping for 10-2-1 record after Saturday, and I am hoping the nightmares of the 1993 game go away!!

In our lifetime Mr. the Buckeyes can set the longest winning streak in the series, even in the horrible Cooper years they only beat us four in a row once (1988-1991). We can make it five in a row (2004-2008).

In my lifetime, U of M still leads 16-19-2.

  3. Seymour11 - regarding the 2004 game, not only was Michigan introduced to Troy Smith, but # 11 Anthony Gonzalez made an immediate contribution as well - remember that long touchdown right at the very beginning? Gonzo also proved to be quite the Wolverine killer over the next three years.
